Intertextuality Period 6

Intertextuality

is the interrelationship between texts, the way that similar or related texts influence, reflect, or differ from each other.

The three types of intertextuality are obligatory, optional, and accidental.

Obligatory- when the writer deliberately invokes a comparison or association between two (or more) texts.

Optional- it is possible to find a connection to multiple texts of a single phrase, or no connection at all. The intent of the writer when using optional intertextuality, is to pay homage to the 'original' writers.

Accidental- when readers often connect a text with another text, cultural practice or a personal experience, without there being any tangible anchor point within the original text.

In this example of intertextuality the character from the Simpson's are recreating the iconic Beatles album cover Abbey Road.

In this example the minions from the movie Despicable Me are recreating the famous painting titled "American Gothic"

In this intertextual example, Peter Griffin is dressed up like to characters from the 2009 version of the movie Avatar. His skin is also blue like the main characters in the movie. The title at the bottom of the picture is also changed to "Fatatar" to represent how Peter Griffin is big and fat.
